Building the Future Campaign FAQs

List of 7 frequently asked questions.

  • What is the Building the Future fundraising campaign?

We launched a five-year campaign in 2022 inspired by what would be best for our students, which is modernization and expansion. See the new building here.

To that end, we have two aims:

    1)  To raise funds to support the construction of an extension to Loyola School’s original 1900 building.

    2)  To add to the school’s endowment fund to maintain a larger school campus and serve our Mission.

  • What are the major improvements to Loyola as a result of this expansion?

We’ve added 30% to the campus’ square footage. We’ve added: a STEM lab, a Music & Dance studio and rehearsal rooms, a College Guidance and Discernment Center, and break-out rooms for seminar and mentoring collaborations. We’ve expanded the Commons cafeteria and added student services offices such as Counseling, and Campus Ministries. We’ve expanded the Library to create an adaptable classroom, reading rooms, and a group study area. We expanded into the JUG Yard, a good portion of which remains as an external courtyard.
  • With additional space, will Loyola School increase student enrollment?

No, the project was not undertaken to increase enrollment. One of Loyola’s hallmarks is our low student-to-faculty ratio (8:1) and class sizes. Our objective is to maintain that intimate atmosphere.
  • How is the new building project financed?

The new building construction and upkeep is financed partly through the Building the Future fundraising campaign and through debt financing. Loyola doesn’t plan to fund this major endeavor through tuition or future tuition increases.
  • How should I designate my gift?

We’re asking our community to make donations to the Building the Future campaign and to the Annual Fund. You may give to the Campaign in general, or note if you wish it to support the Building or Endowment. Your choice. Loyola’s Annual Fund provides flexible resources to apply as opportunities and needs arise during the school year. Loyola allocates 75% of our operating budget to our people in salaries, benefits, and professional development to both retain and recruit dedicated professionals.
  • When was the last time that Loyola School renovated its campus?

That would be 70 years ago in 1954. At that time, school leadership replaced a row of brownstone buildings on 83rd Street with the low-lying building that houses our Commons cafeteria and gymnasium.
  • How is the new building environmentally friendly and sustainable?

The Universal Apostolic Preferences put forth by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) calls us to “care for our Common home.” With that in mind, the new building utilizes energy and cost-efficient cooling systems, energy efficient windows and insulation, LED lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and creates a new green roof on the building extension.
